    Palm Rumors

The rumors of the release of a small sleek color Palm device have been around every since the release (and popularity) of the Palm V series device. People love the style, weight, and size of the V(x) series. The rumors about the "soon to be released" color Palm device with the form factor of the Palm V series have suddenly escalated. The rumors have just got a face and name: m505. Click on the image to enlarge it.

The New Palm Smartphones: Small and Powerful, the Palm Centro is the most affordable Smartphone. Which Palm OS Treo 755p do you like, the Burgundy or Dark Blue? The Treo 680 is available from AT&T in Silver or Crimson. The Treo 700p ( Verizon or Sprint) is still an option for some. All of these have more memory, better camera and faster Internet speeds than what the fantastic Treo 650 ( Unlocked , Cingular , Sprint ) provides. Is the Windows Mobile your mobile cup of tea? Then the Treo 750 Smartphone (AT&T) orthe Treo 700wx (from Sprint or Verizon Wireless) might be for you. Palm delivers the palm Treo 700.

You have been waiting for it to cost less than $30, now it does. What are you waiting for? Get your memory card today! Now you do not have to leave your movies, music, data files and more at home or the office. Carry it today on your new SD card!

Want to be in business for yourself but not by yourself? How about being in business with a company that has a solid 16 year history and a revolutionary product that is changing the face of communication. You can be a part of it — the time is now.

    Your story continues...

The image surfaced at http://www.palmstation.com/ on Thu Jan 25 12:02:08 2001 in a post from hal-j. Soon after the image appeared, the rumors began to crop up on sites like, The Register and PalmInfocenter. The PalmInfocenter article has generated lots of responses from its readers. Discussions heightened because of the "Card Info" application icon that is displayed on the circulated photo. The "Card Info" raised the level of anticipation, as it seems to indicate that the "speculated color" device will also have an expansion card slot of some sort. Also, addition of a new clock icon seems to validate it as well.

I hope that the image is real. I think that it will be a successful device for Palm to market. The new device should include a couple of things to make it a real successful product launch. It has to have MORE memory (at least 16-32MB). If this things comes with 32MB of memory built-in, I believe that most current users will easily fork up the funds to buy it. Without this additional RAM it will be simply a prettier Prism. With the addition, it will be bigger than the Sony Playstation 2 launch. Palm also has to make it a priority to create an universal sync port and cradle. The new device should have an universal Sync port or cradle, to allow older devices to use the new cradle (and visa versa). As Palm device continue to be the norm, Palm Inc. cannot expect that each PC will have two cradles. Many homes will have two or more Palm devices in the family. Dad will have his cradle at work, but will expect to use junior's cradle when he comes home. Junior and Dad will have different Palm devices from different manufactures. This scenario is unavoidable.

But do I need color? Once you use a color Palm, you'll never go back to the monochrome screens ever again. I originally owned the Palm III, but quickly upgraded to the Palm IIIx. Two megabytes of memory was just not enough memory to satisfy me. The screen had a tendency to be scratched when the finger tip was used instead of the stylus. The IIIx had a better screen and twice the memory as the III. When the Palm IIIc came along, I still suggested that people buy the Handspring Deluxe. The other devices with the same functions - minus the color, were priced $100 cheaper, I couldn't see color being worth the price difference. I had seen the IIIc in the store, but the standard applications did not use color (aside from blue lines, instead of black ones).

Then in September (2000) I received a new Palm IIIc as a gift. I found color was worth the extra dough. I found application that made the color shine. The clarity of the screen is incredible. I won't go back to monochrome. The brightness is so great (at the brightest setting) that I even use it as a flashlight. Now if you own a monochrome device, it is still difficult for most to justify buying a new color device. Now if you had the device for a couple of years, then it is not that bad. But if you just recently bought a Palm IIIxe, Vx or Visor Platinum, you might have a lot more difficulty ponying up anything. In addition, if you have purchased any accessories, like a keyboard, modem, etc, then it is more difficult to justify the upgrade: unless it is of the same series of Palm devices.

Only time will tell whether this rumor is true, I will bet that it is. Palm has to hear us sooner or later (I pick sooner). The SCREAM heard round the world (wide web) is "IF THEY MAKE, WE WILL BUY IT".

Until this rumored device becomes real, the world will have to chose between the two that are here now:
For the technophile who refuses to see the world in black and white, Palm has created the Palm IIIc handheld--a color version of the company's immensely popular Palm III handheld. Measuring 5.06 by 3.17 by 0.67 inches.

    More Info (Score: 0)
by Anonymous on Monday, January 29 @ 17:12:40 PST
Boy how I wish I could share all the wonderful info I've been able to learn about these new devices that are coming out. Definitely going to be worth every penny. What I can tell you is this...
SD by nature is Plug'N'Play. Meaning anything on that chip can be run FROM
the chip. So any memory concerns should no longer be an issue. Also since SD
is an industry standard no royalties have to be paid to anyone for anything
they do make. Unlike the Springboard, the SoundsGood is a perfect example.
They had to get a special license to be able to use the springboard outside
    of the device.

The Dragonball VZ chip can address 16mb however the 16mb chip is larger, so
that makes it difficult to fit in such a small case. Even people that have
upgraded their Prism's to 16 have done so with some issues.

The costs on the new m505 as Palm is calling it is going to be very
competitively priced. $449 for the m505 and $399 for the m500.

Most likely Palm will have a couple SD modules that will be available when
it is released in mid-April. As PurePalm.com has already reported there will
be several SD Modules available, including MP3, GPS and so on. Again since
it's an industry standard you can expect 3rd party developers to embrace and
produce more products that use this standard. At least on PocketPC already
uses the MMC standard so it would not be unforeseeable for others, or even
an SD expansion Pack for the iPAQ, the clear competitor to any color palm
    device.

The "doctored" image on Palmstation is pretty darn accurate to all the
prototype photos I've seen. The device is going to be almost identical to
the current Palm V series. The m505 is going to weight the same and only be
1 mm thinker. While the m500 is going to be lighter and be in cased with a
metal front and plastic back, but otherwise the same physically. Another
great improvement on the m500 is going to be a paperwhite bg with shades of
grey for text and icons. The readability alone should increase quite a bit.

With the new polymer-ion battery the battery life will get better and since
it is a polymer it will be lighter as well (Double bonus). There are so many
great things Palm is doing with the upcoming models. First among them is the
start of making universal cradles and accessories. Yes that's right you can
expect to see less accessories for just one series of devices and more for
    all devices.
